-How important is accessing prior knowledge for students? (Baseball study)  How do you immerse students in background knowledge or text sets to facilitate activation?

Accessing prior knowledge for students is very critical to promote comprehension. By being able to connect the information they are being presented to something they already have experience or knowledge about, it increases the likelihood of the individual being able to remember the information long-term. Something that I believe is very beneficial for immersing students in background knowledge to facilitate activation is giving students choice on what they are reading. By letting the students choose what they are reading, they are more likely to choose something of interest or something they can connect to, which can increase the level of comprehension and recall of details from the texts.

-Multiple exposures are important for retention and independence. How will you offer these opportunities?

I will offer these by showing the information in a variety of ways. This will allow students to be able to see the information in multiple different ways, which will cover all students various learning styles.

-What strategies stuck out to you in this chapter and what ones and how will you bring them into your instruction?

Something stuck out to me in this chapter is the “KWL 2.0” in chapter 7. I have definitely experienced the silence when moved to the second step of the traditional KWL chart, both as a student and a teacher, so seeing the difference in the flow of questions and discussion was a very powerful change to this graphic organizer. I will definitely be implementing this in my classroom.

"Something I believe is very beneficial for immersing students in background knowledge to facilitate activation is giving students choice on what they are reading"- I completely agree with this Devin. I too allow students to choose what they are interested in reading. I then allow students with the same book interest to converse. This conversation with their peers really dives deeper into that comprehension piece. Not only are they reading about something that interests them (that they more than likely have prior knowledge and/or experience with) they are now having a conversation about it as well.

I agree with you about the KWL 2.0 chart, it was an aha moment for me when I read that. I think that just making this small change when using this chart will be very useful for my students and more beneficial.
