How important is accessing prior knowledge for students? (Baseball study)  How do you immerse students in background knowledge or text sets to facilitate activation?

It is extremely important to access prior knowledge for students. This may look different for some students. Some students have a little bit of information on a topic, but we really need to get into the deep of what they know about a topic so we can see what we need to dig deeper with. Prior knowledge makes the connection to what students know and then build to what they can learn. When we activate the prior knowledge we are making the long term and short term synapses so students make the connections and can remember information easier.

Multiple exposures are important for retention and independence. How will you offer these opportunities?

Having multiple exposures is important due to students not all learning the same. Plus the more the students see/hear information the better they can retain it. I think having audio and print formats would be helpful. Also a variety of texts and ways to display information such as articles, books, posters, etc.

What strategies stuck out to you in this chapter and what ones and how will you bring them into your instruction?

One of the strategies that stuck out to me in these chapters was the fic it anchor chart. I really liked this visual and the fact that it'll help the students to continue on without turning right to the teacher for help. I also liked how they suggest to put only one or two strategies on the poster at first and then build upon them and add as the year progresses and strategies are taught. Students like having a resource to go to and this will help them be successful.

I agree as well with the idea of adding strategies to the charts as students learn them, it then becomes a useful resource that they can refer to throughout the year. I find that when the students have a part in the chart they become more invested in it and will use it on their own when needed.

Hi Deanna:) The "Fix-Up" anchor chart strategy also stood out to me. Being a new teacher in special education, I've learned that my students rely on me a lot for comprehending text. I would use this strategy to help them be more independent and solve problems they come across while reading.

** Totally agree with you on this. Multiple exposures are important.
