-How important is accessing prior knowledge for students? How do you immerse students in background knowledge or text sets to facilitate activation?

Accessing prior knowledge is an important part of the learning process for our students. Having prior knowledge helps us as teachers to know what areas we need to focus on more and what areas don't need as much coverage. I also think that having prior knowledge helps students to feel more confident and comfortable sharing what they know about and can lead to positive social experiences in the classroom during learning time.

-Multiple exposures are important for retention and independence. How will you offer these opportunities?

I have used different graphic organizers and youtube videos in past years to give multiple exposures to students. I would like to venture into trying podcasts and audiobooks with my students this year!

-What strategies stuck out to you in this chapter and how will you bring them into your instruction?

I like the read, rate, reread strategy that was shown in the book. I think it was important to note that spreading rereads out over a few days can be more beneficial than just rereading it 3 times in one day. It's like giving the book or passage a fresh start each day. I like how this strategy also opens up the door for us to have more meaningful conversations with our students about the text because we can dig deeper into their ratings and get down to the "why". If a student gives their text a 1 on the first day and a 4 the next day, we can discuss what changed their rating and made them like it a bit more.

If you try the podcasts, let me know how they work for you.
Also, I agree that rereading 3 times in the same day is a little daunting to say the least. We read long passages that are pretty in depth and this will kill the kids. Spreading rereads over a few days is a must for us.
