-How do we support students who did not master “breaking the code”?

We can support these students by using a mix of exposure to vocabulary through reading and through small group instruction focused on targeted skills that meet their individual needs. This is why the workshop model is so great because it allows ample time for both.

-What did you learn in this chapter and how will you apply it to your instruction?

I will apply more targeted small group instruction in tier 2 vocabulary.

-Small group instruction is most useful for remediation.

Do you incorporate these into your teaching?  How could you?

Small group instruction is an invaluable practice in terms of effective teaching and will be one of my big focuses for this year.

-Name & Summarize (a few sentences) about the “other” chapter you read.

I read ch 17, “The Interdependent Relationship of Skill and Will” which stressed the importance of confidence in terms of effective reading instruction. It outlined behaviors that students without confidence will exhibit and how to overcome them. I also really liked the chart giving readers who lack the words to enter literary conversations a list of words to try.

I think reading chapter 17 will benefit me as I think it is of the most importance to develop confidence in my readers. I am excited to read about how to overcome and help students who are not confident.

The chart is so awesome! It's an "If...Then" chart where typical avoidant behavior is listed with an actual way to approach the issue and re-direct. I LOVE IT!
