-Name & Summarize (a few sentences) about the chapters you read.

Chapter 17: The relationship between skill and will. It discussed negative behaviors which can be seen during reading. There is a nice chart on page 289 with some ways to counteract the negative behaviors. It also discussed self-efficacy and confidence.

Chapter 18: monologic and dialogic talk. It discussed a variety of ways to ask students questions about what they have read.

Chapter 19: The power of a book. This chapter discussed ways to help students find books. It discussed how it is important to have a variety of books for students. I especially liked the intro to this chapter. A student was unable to go on a field trip but his mother took him to the library every day to learn about the things which were on the field trip itinerary.

- How will these impact your teaching? -What strategies did you take away and how will you implement them into your teaching?

The chart on page 289 will be useful to reference when tough behaviors arise.  The chart on pages 308-310 offers some good questions to ask students. These questions would be good to use during small group instruction and read alouds. These resources will be useful to refer to during the whole school year.

I thought that was a great story. Interestingly, the author found that trip more rewarding and engaging than the field trip to Washington, D.C. The chart is an excellent resource for forming questions.

Have a great school year!

I really thought that the story was encouraging because this mom knew the value of a good book. She knew that her son wouldn't miss out on any experiences. I think in life I forget that a book can offer the same opportunities. Im going to have to remember all that a book can offer!

Thanks for pointing out the chart on pg 289, I didn't read that chapter, but your response made me open my book and look at that chart. It will be very useful as I often see some of those negative behaviors.

I also really love that chart and how it breaks down what some "annoying" behaviors are actually communicating and how we can help.
