-Name & Summarize (a few sentences) about the chapters you read.

The Value of Reading: The statistic that reading to children everyday from birth until they enter kindergarten will expose them to a million more words than children read to once or twice a week. This puts children that are not read to every day at a significant disadvantage from the start. This chapter highlighted the practice of deliberate practice for children to use when reading silently.

Monologic and Dialogic Talk:Figure 18.2 is very useful to use to question students about what they have read. This highlighted the difference in questioning, dialogic questions encourage a conversation and that encourages students to think, reread, speculate and explain while looking for evidence in the text.

The Power of a Book: This chapter shows how to help students find those good books to read so that they will develop a love for reading. I liked the example of narrowing down the number of books students can pick from to alleviate the struggle that some students have in finding a good book to read, such as the good books box.

- How will these impact your teaching?

Using the Figure 18.2 in the chapter about different questions to ask students will be very helpful to get students thinking about the text.

-What strategies did you take away and how will you implement them into your teaching?

Again figure 18.2 will be used in my classroom and I would like to try and incorporate the deliberate reading strategy with my reading students.

"Using the Figure 18.2 in the chapter about different questions to ask students will be very helpful to get students thinking about the text."-- Hi Nikki, I agree that Figure 18.2 will be helpful in getting students thinking about text. I am thinking about all the ways that I can use this to get my kids thinking and talking about their reading. I will use these example questions for use with fictional text. I'm now looking for dialogic questions for informational text. Happy 2023-2024 School Year!

When looking through the Dialogic Questions, I immediately started to think about how I could organize and transfer these onto book marks or something that I could easily access so that I could use these with my students. I, like Chris, would also love to have these to accommodate informational text conversations/reflections.

I like how you said the students need to find those good books to read so that thy will develop a love for reading. That is what happened to me when I was young. Found the mysteries novels and have not stopped reading since.
