-Name & Summarize (a few sentences) about the chapters you read.
The Value of Reading: The statistic that reading to children everyday from birth until they enter kindergarten will expose them to a million more words than children read to once or twice a week. This puts children that are not read to every day at a significant disadvantage from the start. This chapter highlighted the practice of deliberate practice for children to use when reading silently.
Monologic and Dialogic Talk:Figure 18.2 is very useful to use to question students about what they have read. This highlighted the difference in questioning, dialogic questions encourage a conversation and that encourages students to think, reread, speculate and explain while looking for evidence in the text.
The Power of a Book: This chapter shows how to help students find those good books to read so that they will develop a love for reading. I liked the example of narrowing down the number of books students can pick from to alleviate the struggle that some students have in finding a good book to read, such as the good books box.
- How will these impact your teaching?
Using the Figure 18.2 in the chapter about different questions to ask students will be very helpful to get students thinking about the text.
-What strategies did you take away and how will you implement them into your teaching?
Again figure 18.2 will be used in my classroom and I would like to try and incorporate the deliberate reading strategy with my reading students.
