Introduce yourself to the group.

  • Hi! My name is Emily Hunt. I am a special education teacher. I teach a 12:1:1 2nd and 3rd grade class.
What stood out to you  in these chapters?

  • I really enjoy reading the letters to George. It was interesting to hear the perspective from a first year teacher. The skilled and less skilled reading checklist was also very thorough and useful. I enjoy the diagrams and checklists.
How does the Science of Reading impact your instruction? (regardless of content area)

  • The science of reading impacts my instruction. We use a variety of materials to target specific science of reading areas. We use Writing Workshop and Heggerty for example. The diagnostic tests we give during the year help to determine what specific areas students need help with or what students do well. I'm looking forward to learning more about the Science of Reading in chapter 15.

What skills are important to be able to read?

  • The following skills are important to be able to read:
  • Phonics
  • word recgonition
  • phonological awareness
  • fluency
  • vocabulary
  • comprehension

I also enjoyed the letters to George, it give it a different perspective.
The skilled and less skilled reader figure brought to life how different the two really are. The very first page (inside cover) is a great one to look back on to for when a student needs some help.
