Word work is something they
learn in primary grades… but is it?
Word work never ends; it is something that is used throughout life whenever a
person comes across a word that is unknown. To this day I am still using word
work to learn new words I come across and I’m 31 years old.
-How do we support students
who did not master “breaking the code”?
I think to “break the code” students need reptation. Practice, practice, practice,
it is the key to really having the information sink in. To support them I would
also make sure they know everyone learns at their own pace and in their own
way.
-What did you learn in this
chapter and how will you apply it to your instruction?
I found the different tiered vocab words very interesting in this chapter, I
find a lot of students have a hard time here so making sure to incorporating it
into their daily learning is very important. We use different kinds of vocab
daily and being that some words are spelled and sound the same it is important for
students to understand the meaning in order to really understand and comprehend
what they are reading. Unfortunately, I am unsure how I will apply this to my instruction this coming year due to being moved and not knowing the students yet. I am excited to learn the students and assist them in their learning this coming year.
-Small group instruction is
most useful for remediation.
Do you incorporate these into your teaching? How could you?
The classroom I was in last year only had 3 students so majority of our work
was small group already. This still didn’t really work in our room due to our
students being all at such different levels academically.
I am going to a new room in the fall with more students so I am hoping to get
more experience in small groups.
-Name & Summarize (a few
sentences) about the “other” chapter you read.
I found Chapter 14 (spelling) very interesting. Learning how to spell now a days is a lot harder than when I was a child, or at least it seems that way.
Teaching how to spell can be so overwhelming sometimes especially since the English
language has so many “rules” when it comes to spelling. So, if I as an adult find it overwhelming or hard at times, I can only imagine how my students feel!
