-How do we support students who did not master “breaking the code”?
By finding where the struggle is occurring, then helping them use different strategies to break through the barrier in their understanding.
-What did you learn in this chapter and how will you apply it to your instruction?
I learned different questions that could be beneficial to track a student's vocabulary development (Figure 10.1). I will apply it to my instruction by asking my students these questions in class.
-Small group instruction is most useful for remediation. Do you incorporate these into your teaching? How could you?
I will ensure I incorporate small group instruction in my teaching as much as possible. It allows the teacher to focus more on specific direct instruction that best fits your students needs.
-Name & Summarize (a few sentences) about the “other” chapter you read.
The other chapter that I read was chapter 11. This chapter discussed preteaching vocabulary and gave different examples of why and how it is done. A main benefit of preteaching vocabulary is to introduce different words that are new to students that they will come across in the text. That will bring students attention towards those words when they read it and allow them to make sense of the word using context clues, or understand the text better if they were also given the definition beforehand.
